Archeology and Natural History

Baseline Archaeological Studies at Rancho San Carlos, Carmel Valley, Monterey County, California
by Gary S. Breschini

The Natural History of Big Sur (California Natural History Guides)
by Paul Henson, Donald J. Usner, Valerie A. Kells (Illustrator)

Finally here is a book that is both a natural history of this beautiful region and an excellent guide to its extensive public lands. The first section introduces the area's geology, climate, flora, fauna, and human history. The second section describes selected sites, trails, and features that are mentioned in Part One. Although Big Sur is world famous for awe-inspiring scenery, it is less known for its great ecological diversity and its significance as a haven for many species of terrestrial and marine wildlife. In no other part of the world do fog-loving coastal redwoods thrive on one slope of a canyon while arid-climate yuccas grow on the other. Similarly, sea otters and cormorants live near dry-climate creatures like canyon wrens and whiptail lizards. The area's staggering beauty and forbidding wilderness have inspired artists, poets, naturalists, and hikersand also real estate developers. As increasing tourism, development pressure, and land-use decisions continue to affect Big Sur, this book will do much to heighten awareness of the region's biotic richness and fragility. Written in nontechnical language, with generous color photographs, drawings, maps, species lists, and a bibliography, it will attract both the casual and the serious naturalist, as well as anyone concerned about preserving California's natural heritage.

Historical

A Wild Coast and Lonely : Big Sur Pioneers
by Rosalind Sharpe Wal

Your stay in Big Sur will be much enriched by reading this. The often dramatic history of the early settlers is beautifully described in this book. Historians however should beware of taking it literally; the rest of you can just enjoy it!

Big Sur Women
by Judith Goodman

This is an intimate glimpse into the lives of nineteen Big Sur women, from early pioneer days to the present. Through diaries, photographs, poems, biographies, letters and interviews, this collection is a wonderful read.
Lots of fine photographs.

Edited by Judith Goodman, who has lived on the Big Sur coast for thirty-five years, the selections in this book are the result of her personal quest for a balance between solitude and community involvement.

Love on the Mountain : The Chronicle Journal of a Camaldolese Monk
by Robert Hale

Take a retreat and read quietly to your heart's content about the spirituality of Walt Whitman...the way monks make corporate decisions...what it takes to be a monk... Fr. Hale's ideas on men and women... the Esalen Institute...Christianity in China... The Annunciation... Washing the Feet... Elizabeth the cat who shares his cell on the mountaintop... This is grounded spirituality for too-busy post-industrial humans!

Henry Miller and My Big Sur Days : Vignettes from Memory
by Judson Crews

Big Sur : A Complete History and Guide
by Tomi Kay Lussier

This is the best short, yet remarkably rich, guide to Big Sur. A bit of history, geology, zoology, what to do, what to see etc.. Written by someone who lives in and loves Big Sur. I highly recommend this if you're planning a trip to Big Sur. -- Magnus Toren
